Our marble sets are made by skilled artisans in Pakistan, a country sitting on some of the largest marble and onyx reserves in the world, across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Balochistan and Punjab. Stone carving there goes back generations. Quarried blocks are cut down to workable pieces, each chessman is turned on a lathe and finished by hand, and every square is cut by hand, laid up into a board and polished.

Marble punches well above its price. The weight, the cool of real stone under your hand, the veining that makes every board different. These look and feel far more expensive than they are, which is exactly why they are one of our favourite things to sell as a gift. And never two the same.

Hand finished from natural stone, so veining and colour vary from set to set. Not for food use. Not dishwasher safe.

• Dust with a soft, dry cloth.
• For marks, use a barely damp cloth with a drop of neutral soap, then dry straight away.
• Never use acidic or abrasive cleaners. Vinegar, lemon, bleach, scouring powder and bathroom sprays will etch the surface.
• Keep out of direct sunlight. Prolonged sun can fade the dyed colour.
• Lift pieces rather than sliding them, and store them separated rather than loose in a bag.
• Keep the felt bases dry.
