The set to learn on. The board carries letters and numbers along the edge, so a child can follow a lesson, write a game down, and replay it from a book. The pieces are real wood, one side natural and one stained dark, and the board sits flat and solid on any table. Simple, classic, and priced for a family.

Making our own is how we keep control of two things: what the product actually is, and what it costs. We choose the materials, the weighting and the finish, and we check what turns up. It is the reason our tournament gear and club sets are priced the way they are.

Care & maintenance

Dust with a soft, dry cloth, wiping along the grain.
Do not use detergents, solvents, spray polish or silicone furniture sprays.
Never let water sit on the surface. On veneered and inlaid boards it can lift the veneer.
Keep away from direct sunlight, heaters and air conditioning vents. Sun fades timber unevenly and dry heat can open joints.
Avoid big swings in humidity. Timber moves.
Store flat or upright and supported, not leaning against a wall.
On folding and storage boards, do not force hinges, latches or drawers.
Keep the felt bases dry.

Really happy with this set. I was looking for a proper wooden chess set without going over the top, and this feels like a great balance. The double-weighted pieces are excellent in the hand, the board size is comfortable for regular home use, and the overall quality is fantastic for the price. Both the board and pieces are clear and easy to read, and the weighting gives the set a very satisfying quality.

TLDR – Love this chess set. The board was expertly packed, arrived promptly and the finishing touch was a quirky personalised note.
As a primarily online chess enthusiast, for the longest time I was searching for a wooden chess set that bordered a premium feel but didn’t plunder the cheque account. Something that upon display sparked curiosity from guests, but wasn’t too extravagant given my meagre online rating.
This chess set simply ticked all these boxes for me.
It’s tournament size fulfils the hope that maybe with enough practice, I might feel confident enough to walk into a club. Yet its affordability spoke to my more pragmatic side in the realisation that this will never happen.
