Description

A board made of wood all the way through, by hand, in India. Acacia squares in warm brown, maple squares in pale cream, and every board a little different because every tree is. Rex Noir round the edges so the board looks finished from any angle, and put green felt underneath so it sits still and leaves the table alone.

The board

"Play Beautifully" with Rex Noir. Superior wooden chess sets, made the traditional way. Every piece and every square is worked from quality timbers by master artisans in Amritsar, in northern India, the city that supplies most of the world's best wooden chess pieces and where the carving trade runs back to the 1800s.

Rex Noir is our benchmark for traditional wooden chess. It strikes the best balance we have found between beauty and playability, which is why we call these 'proper chess sets'. The difference is in the timber, the shape, the finish and how long the whole thing lasts. It is what our own staff buy for their families.

Care & maintenance

The board

Dust with a soft, dry cloth, wiping along the grain.
Do not use detergents, solvents, spray polish or silicone furniture sprays.
Never let water sit on the surface. On veneered and inlaid boards it can lift the veneer.
Keep away from direct sunlight, heaters and air conditioning vents. Sun fades timber unevenly and dry heat can open joints.
Avoid big swings in humidity. Timber moves.
Store flat or upright and supported, not leaning against a wall.
On folding and storage boards, do not force hinges, latches or drawers.
Keep the felt bases dry.

High quality board, good weight, beautiful design with rounded edges. Felt on the bottom is well placed. Very elegant look, feel and design with a classic colour. Very well packaged and fast delivery. Excellent value.

Fantastic Standard Board

The photos don't do this board justice. This board is thicker than it looks in the photos. The playing surface looks fantastic. Great sized board for large (10cm pieces). All this and the rounded corners make this an impressive display for chess pieces and really fun to play on. Board colours work well with a black and white chess set (the only colour we have played so far)

I spent a long time looking for the perfect board, considering boards up to almost $1000 in value . This is a solid, well made board, great finish. And those curved edges... love it (I was looking into making my own, or designing one, for a woodworker - and curved edging and corners was in the design). Perfect for 3.75” to 4” king. Looking forward to the chess games with my son and friends.
