Rechapados Ferrer has been making chessboards in La Garriga, just outside Barcelona, since the early 1960s. The family started in the 1950s as wood-veneer specialists and the workshop is now run by the founders' grandson. Fourteen people make around twenty thousand boards a year, and it takes four or five years to train a craftsperson to do it properly. Their boards appeared in Netflix's The Queen's Gambit, including the final match board in the Moscow scene.

Ferrer boards are the real thing, and the gap between one of these and the copies that imitate them is obvious the moment you see one in daylight. Matched veneers, dead-true squares, an even finish. Ferrer boards come in a wide variety of woods and sizes, which also makes them the easiest boards to pair with pieces you already own.

• Dust with a soft, dry cloth, wiping along the grain.
• Do not use detergents, solvents, spray polish or silicone furniture sprays.
• Never let water sit on the surface. On veneered and inlaid boards it can lift the veneer.
• Keep away from direct sunlight, heaters and air conditioning vents. Sun fades timber unevenly and dry heat can open joints.
• Avoid big swings in humidity. Timber moves.
• Store flat or upright and supported, not leaning against a wall.
• On folding and storage boards, do not force hinges, latches or drawers.
• Keep the felt bases dry.
