DGT is a Dutch company in Enschede, and it is the reason the modern chess clock looks the way it does. The first digital prototype was a university student's project in the 1980s. FIDE contracted DGT in 1993 to produce the Official FIDE Chess Clock, and that relationship has run through the DGT 2010, 3000 and 2500. DGT electronic boards have broadcast elite chess since the 1998 Olympiad.

DGT is our benchmark for clocks. They are reliable, and the controls make sense when you are short of time, which is the entire job. You do pay for the name, and cheaper clocks will handle basic time controls. If you are getting serious, buy the DGT once.

The most forgiving material in our range.

• Wipe with a damp cloth. Mild soap is fine for marks. Dry afterwards.
• Do not use solvents, methylated spirits, acetone or abrasive cleaners. They dull or soften the surface.
• Hand-painted and antiqued finishes should be wiped gently, never scrubbed.
• Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight. Plastic and resin can yellow.
• Keep the felt bases dry.
