Description

In 1831 a sandbank on the Isle of Lewis collapsed and gave up a chest of carved chessmen, some nine hundred years old and Viking in origin. The faces are what everyone remembers: kings glum, queens with a hand to the cheek, berserker rooks biting their shields. These pieces copy them in detail, moulded to look like carved stone.

The pieces

The most forgiving material in our range.

Wipe with a damp cloth. Mild soap is fine for marks. Dry afterwards.
Do not use solvents, methylated spirits, acetone or abrasive cleaners. They dull or soften the surface.
Hand-painted and antiqued finishes should be wiped gently, never scrubbed.
Keep out of prolonged direct sunlight. Plastic and resin can yellow.
Keep the felt bases dry.

When Chess World advertised that these pieces were available, as a former History teacher, I loved the history surrounding them, that the originals are probably approximately 900 years old, of Viking origin and only discovered in the 19th century. Given their obvious popularity, stock sold out quickly. I didn't have to wait long however for my set to arrive. Beautifully boxed, they are a fantastic set of chess pieces, stunning replicas of the originals. Perfectly weighted, they're a delight to move around the board.
