Scali is an alabaster workshop in Volterra, Tuscany, where this stone has been carved since the Etruscans, roughly 2,500 years. The techniques pass from father to son. Blocks are cut on a hand-guided band saw, squares are cut, glued into a board and sanded flat, and every piece is turned on a lathe and finished by hand. The colour is not painted on. Pieces sit in water-based dye for up to twenty days, and each one takes it differently, so no two are alike.

Alabaster is the top of the range in stone. Marble sets are lovely, but the precision and execution here sit a level above, in the detail, the line and the finish. That is what two and a half thousand years of practice buys you.

Hand finished from natural stone, so veining and colour vary from set to set. Not for food use. Not dishwasher safe.

• Dust with a soft, dry cloth.
• For marks, use a barely damp cloth with a drop of neutral soap, then dry straight away.
• Never use acidic or abrasive cleaners. Vinegar, lemon, bleach, scouring powder and bathroom sprays will etch the surface.
• Keep out of direct sunlight. Prolonged sun can fade the dyed colour.
• Lift pieces rather than sliding them, and store them separated rather than loose in a bag.
• Keep the felt bases dry.
