Manopoulos is a Greek family manufacturer, working from a factory in Thebes and making chess since 1970, when founder Costas Manopoulos cast his first bronze figures as an art student in Athens. Their boards are marquetry, fine wood veneers inlaid by hand into pattern, sometimes set with shell, stone, metal or brass. The metal pieces are cast, plated, then varnished and finished by hand.

Pick up a Manopoulos knight and you will feel the difference straight away. These are solid, properly weighted metal pieces, not the thin hollow castings that flex in your fingers. We have not found that quality anywhere else in this category, and the themed ranges are the sets people stop and stare at.

• Never let water sit on the surface. On veneered and inlaid boards it can lift the veneer.
• Keep away from direct sunlight, heaters and air conditioning vents. Sun fades timber unevenly and dry heat can open joints.
• Avoid big swings in humidity. Timber moves.
• Store flat or upright and supported, not leaning against a wall.
• On folding and storage boards, do not force hinges, latches or drawers.
• Keep the felt bases dry.
