These are really nice, I set them up on the lawn and left them there for half a day with a strong breeze blowing, none fell over. I thought of adding some fine sand in the holes to give them a little extra weight, probably not required unless set up in a really strong wind. The Pawns have a small hole in the upper side of their body whilst the major pieces have a similar sized hole on their base, I would have put these small holes in the upper body . The chess board mat lays flat and pegs easily into the ground. I was able to walk on the 'board' without it crumpling or making the pieces fall over. I would have like to see the sides numbered and lettered for modern chess notation. The carry bag easily fits all of the pieces and mat (it is not a tight fit and there is room for some other stuff in there), it has a single hand carry handle and an over the shoulder carry strap long enough to be useful. However, when sitting upright the zipper on the end opening faces upside down in my opinion. It opens onto the ground instead of opening at the top and having the flap lay on the ground. The carry bag looks durable . These are minor concerns only. Very happy with my purchase, I would rate this 4.5 Stars if I was able.
I purchased this chess set because I wanted the enjoyment and novelty of playing with large pieces. It was certainly enjoyed by the younger members at our chess club. Instead of sitting around a single square table with a regular chess set, we simply put 4 of these tables together and laid the board out on top of them. I think walking around this table to move the pieces is much better than playing on the ground. The best thing that attracted me to this chess set, is that in my opinion, all of the plastic pieces are correctly shaped and sized in proportion to classic Stoughton pieces as per the FIDE rules, with the exception that the King should be slightly taller. However, this is a really minor unnoticeable issue to the casual observer, given that the king is in correct proportion except that the cross on the top of the King should have been manufactured just a little larger. The Knight also has a nice cheeky grin or smile. If a chess set with larger pieces had this feature, I would have preferred it. The fabric board is quite light and has been stitched together quickly to keep the cost of manufacture down. But once the pieces are in play, I find that this is less of an issue. If you are planning to play the pieces on your own board anyway, this is no longer a problem, and the pieces are ideally suited to chessboard squares about 225 mm to 250 mm square.
Arrived in tine and light for kids
I was surprised by how well this set provided my students with a visualize 'game context' moment. It really made this part of the 'chess lesson' easy!
